Around this time each year, you are probably putting in place plans for the financial year ahead. Maybe you even achieve some of those goals. But you could never have planned for some of the unexpected events, opportunities, twists and turns of recent times. Take me for example. It wasn’t that long ago, I worked for a large financial services firm. I had no plans to build a financial planning practice. I couldn’t have imagined building an on-line community. If you’d told me a couple of years ago I’d be doing most client appointments on Zoom, I’d have said you were mad. None of these things evolved as part of a longer-term strategy. Why is that? Well, predicting the future is hard! We underestimate how much we, and the world will change over time. When nothing goes according to plan, it's tempting to conclude that planning is a giant waste of time. Why bother with all the work involved in goal setting and planning, when it could all change tomorrow? A valid question. The thing is, longer-term planning (done right) is not about trying to predict the future. It’s more an awareness-generating process. It helps you identify your goals, resources and timelines. It gives you purpose, direction and focus. And most importantly of all, planning done right, provides the insight to act. No question, in my 30 plus years of helping people stress less about their money, I’ve discovered that too much talking and not enough doing is the biggest barrier to success.
