This month marks my 30th year as a Financial Adviser. Watching people grow and achieve, and knowing you might have had a little bit to do with that, has been incredibly rewarding. In those 30 years, I have immersed myself in the world of wealth management, coaching and mentoring. In fact, I’ve turned in to a bit of a hoarder, taking large amounts of notes and putting together a huge library of books and manuals.
"Do you want to be able to maintain your standard of living in your golden years? Do you want to make sure you don’t run out of money before you run out of time? Do you want to know how much money you’ll need to make that happen?” . If you answered yes to these questions, then the only way you can find the answers is to calculate the number. Anything less is a guess!!
3/9/2016 How Long Will You Live? How many years have you got left in you? If you’re an average bloke who’s 50, the current Australian Life Tables say you’ve got 32.2 years to go. If you’re an average female, you’ve got another 35.7.
But we’re not all average. Ageing is a very personal thing. Moving from failure to success in anything will often mean exchanging a bad habit for a good one. Habits around decent wealth management are a great example of this. You probably know what I mean. We focus on the present – we want it and we want it now. The outperformers though resist some of this short-term temptation for an immediate reward and wait to receive a larger or more enduring reward later on.
Imagine if you could see the future - your future. Imagine fast forwarding 20 years from now, what financial advice would you give yourself today.
Your words of wisdom might sound like this: I successfully quit smoking 20 years ago today – 20th May 1996 (not that I’m counting). Thank goodness, what a filthy habit!!
As anyone who has given up the smokes will tell you, quitting is tough. In fact, I had numerous attempts before I got it right. You’re excited! The big day has finally come. You’ve dreamt of this moment for years; no more pointless Monday morning meetings, no more doing emails at 6am, no more of those ridiculous team-building events, no more strategic opportunities to leverage our game-changing, holistic, disruptive, evidence-based, sustainable blah blah blah nonsense.
